Draft Ask for Law Student Participation

KOP – A Nonprofit Media Organization Supporting Music Creators and Digital Fair Use

About Us

KOP is a Kansas-based nonprofit building a new kind of digital music ecosystem — one rooted in free-form curation, live performance promotion, and educational advocacy. Our mission is to amplify underrepresented artists and protect the cultural commons from overreaching enforcement of copyright and platform policy.

We operate at the intersection of media, law, and technology, focusing on YouTube music reactors, independent musicians, and grassroots digital creators.

The Opportunity for Law Students

We are seeking a partnership with law students — either through a media law clinic, externship program, or guided individual study — to assist us with the review and refinement of legal templates and educational materials related to:

  • YouTube copyright takedowns and Content ID misuse
  • Fair use and nonprofit exemptions
  • DMCA counter-notice workflows
  • Public education about digital rights

Students would not provide legal advice to the public, but instead assist with:

  • Reviewing AI-generated drafts of standard legal responses
  • Helping design educational materials for creators
  • Contributing to the development of safe, consistent boilerplate language

Scope and Supervision

We understand the boundaries of legal education and representation. To that end:

  • No public-facing legal advice will be offered
  • All student work will remain internal to KOP and reviewed by our team
  • If part of a clinic or for-credit program, we welcome faculty supervision
  • We will clearly mark all materials as “Not Legal Advice” and maintain appropriate disclaimers

Why It Matters

This is an opportunity for students to work on real-world copyright, First Amendment, and platform governance issues — not in the abstract, but through live cases where creators are losing access to speech, income, and artistic freedom.

Your students will help shape a safer, fairer landscape for independent culture online.
